Her Experiences

Hmm... I woke up to loud clanks and clangs outside, and opened my door to see Sanae on the ground surrounded by the remains of shattered plates! I helped her get up, but she insisted on cleaning up the mess. When I told her to watch her fingers and leave it to the Fireflies, Sanae burst into tears. It turns out that she heard the Colossus was looking for maids, and she decided to work here to help pay off her debts. But she managed to break so many plates before even meeting %s...
You know what's strange, is I don't recall we ever put out a request for maids on the Colossus. Until Sanae told me she paid a hefty fee to some middleman for this job, that's when I got an inkling of what must've happened.
Anyhow, I've decided to keep an eye out for reliable gigs that Sanae can take on! I hope she can clear her debts instead of adding to them...

Her Story (I)

Umm ahhhh... %s, i-it's good to see you!
Did Miss Vice tell you already? I-I'm really sorry! I broke so many plates right upon my arrival on the Colossus... Would you please forgive me? E-Even if I don't voice my thoughts, I know you can read my mind. I bet you can see that my head is filled with thoughts of you! Ahhh... w-what I mean is I really want to make up for my mistakes! Please don't suck my soul away. I-I-I can serve as your maid for free...
Huh? You won't suck my soul away? Are you making a joke? People say I'm simple-minded and easy to fool... I-It's best you don't make fun of me because I've read a book about you. You lived underground for seventeen long years without food, water, or air. You sucked the souls of many underground creatures to survive! What was the name of the book again? Ah right! It was called, "Revealed! The Enigmatic Last Caelestite!"
That book is full of nonsense? Uwaaah... but I had to work for so many days to make enough to buy it...

Her Story (II)

%s, err... May I run errands for you? I'll do all the heavy lifting as long as you pay my salary... I don't ask for much... because I owe Miss Bethel a lot of money... Please don't misunderstand. Miss Bethel is a lovely lady. She never rushes me to pay her back. Quite the opposite, she's always helping me look for work. Yes, my work in the Andersen family was introduced by her.
I owe money b-because I made a hole in Miss Bethel's merchant ship... I didn't mean it. I was a part-time worker on the ship. I carried five boxes in a rush to make a bit extra money, but when I was unloading, the deck was... Thank goodness the hole was blocked quickly or the entire ship might've sunk...
That ship? It was sailing from the main island to Umbraton. Ah... I'm from Cloud Island. Hmm... It's getting confusing, isn't it? I guess I'm not good at storytelling... Really? You want to hear more?
Mmm... I sneaked onto the ship from Cloud Island and realized it was going to the main island... Those seamen saw me and threatened to feed me to the fish... Luckily, a girl with pink hair stopped them.

Her Story (III)

I still dream about her up to this day. Her pink hair was long and silky, and everything about her was so graceful! A-At the time, I'd never met a noble heiress before. After the ship arrived at the main island, she's the one who got me on a merchant ship headed for Umbraton and left me a lot of money. I didn't even have a chance to get her name. I only know she was going to the main island for school... %s, please tell me if you know who she is! I have always dreamed about making enough money in Umbraton to pay her back one day... I know how unrealistic that sounds...
Um... You want to know why I was determined to go to Umbraton? I heard workers were paid well there. Why are you so shocked? You think my reasoning is too straightforward? But I didn't have a choice back then...
Cloud Island is my home, but I had no place of refuge there... Manae agrees.

Her Story (IV)

%s! Are you interrogating a criminal here or something?! Yes, it's Manae speaking!
Hmph! Don't put Sanae in a tight spot. What's the point in talking about the past? If you really are interested, then as Sanae's sister, I can humor you.
She had her reasons for leaving Cloud Island. It was all because of our uncle, Hansuke. Our parents entrusted Sanae to his care when they joined the rebellion against the regime of the main island. But he took her foster money for himself and made Sanae a slave in his izakaya! Our parents were killed by the general sent from the main island, and that bastard treated Sanae even worse. He claimed Sanae was wanted and kept her working in the izakaya day and night. And then he was arrested for selling fake liquor, which implicated Sanae. It was then that we found out Sanae was never listed as wanted. However, Cloud Island was a small place, and no one dared to take her in after her release from prison. That was when she learned that money was easy to come by in Umbraton.
Alas... Only after our arrival did we realize that Umbraton was not much better than Cloud Island. There were even Eclipsites... Sanae survived only because Mother taught her some witchcraft of Cloud Island before... %s, don't you underestimate my Sanae, or I'll kick your ass!
